DONALD TRUMP and THE ECONOMIST
ZANNY MINTON BEDDOES SE RIT DES CRITIQUES…
J’imagine sans peine tout le mal que vous pensez de la candidature de Donald Trump, pour peu que vous ayez lu et adhéré aux analyses sur sa candidature, présentées par n’importe quel journal de presque n’importe quel pays du monde.
The Economist n’a pas fait exception à cette touchante unanimité, bien au contraire ! Le 5 mai 2016, l’hebdomadaire The Economist a publié en couverture un article de fond violemment hostile à Donald Trump, fièrement signé par Zanny Minton Beddoes (ZMB), rédactrice en chef.
Il faut convenir que personne ne peut être plus « politically correct » que cette dame, dix-septième et première femme rédactrice en chef de The Economist.
Née en 1967, elle a été diplômée par Oxford University et par Harvard. Recrutée comme conseillère dans un groupe de Harvard par le Ministère des Finances polonais pour libéraliser son économie, elle travaille ensuite deux ans au FMI sur des programmes d’ajustement économique. Elle rejoint finalement The Economist en 1994 où elle gravit les échelons hiérarchiques jusqu’à devenir rédacteur en chef en février 2015. Elle est alors considérée comme l’une des journalistes économiques les plus influentes du monde, d’autant plus qu’elle publie dans les revues les plus prestigieuses, qu’elle intervient régulièrement sur les plus importantes chaines de TV et qu’elle donne des conférences dans les grands cercles d’influence américains. En 2015, elle a même été l’une des 133 invités de la conférence de Bidelberg qui réunit les dirigeants économiques et politiques pro-américains du monde pour des discussions informelles et secrètes, le gouvernement du monde en somme.
ZMD ne pouvait pas laisser passer l’affront du triomphe de Donald Trump aux primaires du Parti Républicain, d’autant plus que son hebdomadaire avait violemment critiqué le candidat tout au long de la campagne et prédit avec aplomb son échec aux primaires.
Elle a donc réagi avec vivacité, produisant un article encore plus violemment hostile au futur candidat républicain que les précédents, dénonçant ses nombreux travers personnels, sa démagogie, ses contradictions, son incompétence, le danger qu’il présentait pour le parti républicain, pour les Etats-Unis et pour le monde. Bref le diable.
Elle s’est prononcée ensuite sans nuance pour la candidature d’Hillary Clinton à la Présidence des Etats-Unis, puis a pronostiqué hardiment l’échec final de Donald Trump à la dite élection, sans tenir compte du fait que tous les pronostics précédents de The Economist ont été démentis depuis dix-huit mois comme s’il ne parvenait plus à capter le changement d’humeur qui a saisi le monde ces derniers temps.
L’article de The Economist a entrainé, de très nombreux commentaires, au delà de la norme (plus de 1200 au moment où je publie ce blog) et en grande majorité hostiles.
Les quatre extraits suivants de ces commentaires sont intégralement transcrits ci dessous en anglais (avec les fautes d’origine !). Faites l’effort de les lire, si vous voulez comprendre ce qui va se passer et non ingurgiter sans esprit critique ce que les médias vous content, c’est le cas de l’écrire. L’un des derniers commentaires parus recommande d’ailleurs sagement à The Economist (TE) de ne pas se risquer à des pronostics :
« Don't make predictions, TE, especially when you don't know what the hell you're talking about.
« Fortunately, Mr Trump will probably lose the general election. A candidate whom two-thirds of Americans view unfavourably will find it hard to win 65m votes, which is about what the winning candidate will need. The share of women who disapprove of him is even higher." »
Enough with the unfavorables already. Trump's favorability rating was historically low among Republican voters, but he still won, didn't he?

Un troisième, chaudement approuvé par les lecteurs (30), exprimait un point de vue profondément pessimiste :
« H.Clinton is one of several (along with Sarkozy/Cameron/etc) war criminals who illegally attacked Libya, creating more and more failed states convulsing in violence and killing fields with millions of innocent people (including children, women) being murdered / injured / traumatized / displaced and captive women being sold as concubines, hundreds of thousands of refugees flooding Europe, drowned toddlers being washed ashore, Afghans, including children and 6-month old baby, drowned in the Aegean trying to reach Greece, setting fires to the whole region which have simply radicalized and created more and more terrorists.
The Reps say they believe in economic freedom—which is a lie—while they definitely, and overtly, don’t believe in social freedom.
The Dems say they believe in social freedom—which is a lie—while they definitely, and overtly, don’t believe in economic freedom.
The Dems claim to care about people, while the Reps appear to care mostly about things.
The Reps never have the moral and philosophical high ground and always come off looking like selfish hypocrites.
The Republicans are the Stupid Party, and the Democrats are, in fact, the Evil Party.
There’s actually little to distinguish the Dems and the Reps, besides their rhetoric.
But there’s a huge change afoot. The country itself is fragmenting.
The popularity of Sanders, who’s got the youth totally on his side and has won eight out of nine of the last caucuses and primaries, shows where the Democratic Party’s heart, and future, lies. But the Party machine won’t give him the nomination, which will increasingly reveal the Democratic Party as being very non-democratic.
The Republican party should splinter. In fact, it will likely self-destruct if it doesn’t accept the nomination of Trump.
U.S. voters don’t get a say in who runs the country. Instead, a “shadow government” of elites, cronies, lobbyists, bureaucrats, politicians, and zombies – aka the Deep State – is permanently in power.
Put simply, it doesn’t matter which party is in power; the Deep State rules.»
Un quatrième, qui a obtenu le maximum d’approbation des lecteurs (40), dénonce les effets de la globalisation sur l’économie et la société américaine :
« Wow reading the Economist you get the same foretelling of a disaster with Trump as you would with a Yellowstone eruption. TRUMP WILL BE ELECTED and it all comes down to this... 25 years ago we were told by Republican establishment and the Democrat Clintons, Globalization Globalization, Globalization.
Since the 50's to the 80's the largest employers of the US were US Steel, GM motors, Standard Oil (Exxon now) etc.. all paying equivalent to $30+ an hour in todays wages.
By the late 90's in the Midwest all manufacturing started to rapidly disappear, In the Northwest the logging industry started to rapidly disappear. We were told don't worry with retraining and a shift in the economy to more service and tech work we will be better off.
Now if you type in biggest US employers it is Walmart, Target, Yum brand Foods, and McDonald's, average pay is Minimum wage! To top off this they now find themselves competing for the minimum wage jobs with illegal immigrants at home and foreigners from countries that don't play by any rules if those jobs are being shipped overseas.
They can't make their house payments but are told by the media that they will be branded racists if they complain. Meanwhile elites out there raised their net worth over 10 fold from all the cost benefits of Globalization and try to placate the rest of us with a higher minimum wage and explanations that now we can buy a big screen TV cheaper at the Walmart we are probably working at.
These people told not to worry 25 years ago are now reaching retirement looking back on a life of unemployment, reduced wages, reduced standard of living, losing or never being able to buy a home and are asking themselves "how long is this long term benefit going to take cause in the long term we are dead!"
The Yellowstone eruption has already occurred!!
Trump is the only one talking about this!
My advice to the editors and journalists of TE is to cut out every article written in your publication about Trump and Hillary and pin them to your wall… In 6 months time Bon Appetit case you'll be eating your words. ».
Si vous êtes parvenu jusqu’au bout de ce long blog, vous savez ce qui vous reste à faire : suivez attentivement l’élection américaine à venir car elle s’annonce passionnante et qu’elle risque d’avoir des rebondissements dramatiques, faites vous une opinion et formulez votre pronostic.
Il sera temps ensuite d’analyser les conséquences du résultat électoral…
